Reader beware: If you do not like male/male romance, do not buy this book!
His Royal Secret by Lilah Pace is a bit of a forbidden romance. James is the Prince of Wales, next in line to be crowned king, and is expected to marry and produce an heir to the thrown. Except, the good prince is completely, totally gay. Tucked away in the closet, terrified to come out because he could lose his crown. The repercussions could be disastrous.
James meets Ben in an unlikely chance of fate, he seems like the perfect man to spend an afternoon with. Equal parts terrifying and exciting, James makes that connection and gives into his desires…letting himself have something just for him.
I love both James and Ben’s characters. They are both strong men. Slightly arrogant, but kind and generous. Neither of them can have a real relationship, so the affair they start seems to be the perfect solution. Oh to live in the land of denial. With the kind of chemistry they have, they really were crazy to think it would end with just some hot sex. Though, it was hot as can be…off the charts even.
“God damn you, yes. Fuck me to my knees. Fuck me blind. Do it.”
The secondary characters are extremely well developed, I fell in love with both Cass and Indigo. Cass is probably the very best friend a prince who is living a secret life could ever ask for. She played his beard for years taking a beating from the paparazzi in order to protect his secret. Then there is Indigo, his sister, she suffers from mental illness. Pace does a phenomenal job of showing how mental illness impacts friends and family, not just the person suffering. It’s heartbreaking and Pace truly exposed harsh truths…I love that she didn’t pull punches.
He felt so helpless. It was terrible to love someone and to be unable to do anything to save them from this kind of pain and fear. Was it like this to watch someone drown, or know you couldn’t pull her from a fire?
Definitely a great start to the series, I can’t wait to find out what happens with Ben and James…
“Nobody else ever got to me like this. Nobody ever. And nobody’s going to get to me like this again. You got through my defenses when no one else could, or can, or will. You’re the only one I could ever have loved, the only man on this earth. I can’t change it now. It’s done. All I know is that if I walk away from you tonight, I’ll spend the rest of my life…broken in two. Needing you. So I won’t walk away.”
